i read in a book somewhere that essential oils can be really helpful. eg, lavender is supposed to be relaxing. Where can i buy essential oils, and what are the different scents used for?
Thanks x
Essential oils are sold at Whole Foods, health food stores, large grocery stores like HEB Plus, and online.
Some oils and their uses:
Lavender: Headaches
Chamomile: Sleeplessness, anxiety
Cinnamon: Bronchitis, PMS
Rose Otto: Grief, asthma
Lemon: Lethargy, depression
Peppermint: Nausea, sinus problems
Eucalyptus: Coughs, stuffiness
Ylang Ylang: Anger
Clove: Depression, indigestion
Bergamot: Tension, fear
And to correct a previous response, cinnamon is a spice, it is also an essential oil- the spice is from the bark, and the essential oil used in aromatherapy comes from the leaf.

Any decent health food store…
Lavender: good for healing cuts etc.
Tea Tree oil: Also good for healing cuts, but is mostly antiseptic to stop bacteria.
apart from that there’s numerous different oils, so buy a book on them that will tell you what does what.

cinnamon is a spice not an essential oil
there is an essential oil calle cinnamon bark though
i have books and books on essential oils, i buy mine from my local health food shop ( julian graves’ doesnt sell them) they also sell them in pharmacies like boots, but your local pharmcay may be cheaper.
basically they have different properties for healing e.g lavender is good for minor burns tea tree for acne
they are not just good for their scent
i have a very handy book with all the lists of their uses but it would take ages to write it all here.
check out your bookshop, library or even online for a list
heres some a brief one:
-eucalyptus- colds
-lavender- worry, panic attacks (endless list)
-lemon- sluggishness
-rosemary-lethargy, mental calmness/stimulation
peppermint- mental stimulant/studying
-neroli- stress, shock, overwork
chamomile roman- tantrums, restless mind
-bergamot- anxiety, depression
they also have a lot of properties for the physical but there are so many that list has been condenseced, i dont think eucalyptus has any property regarding the scent but i could be wrong
all this is from my book called - aromatherapy a guide for home use by christine westwood
id like to add that using essential oils for physical benefits e.g. burns may require dilution of the oil and some oils cant be used during pregnancy
if you just want to use them for the smell buy the one you like best, if you want to use them for their properties then buy a book which will explain how to use the safely ( reason: i used lavender on a large cut on my foot once without dilution as sometimes u can use it neat and it burnt my foot/ made it worse)

most essential oils are available on-line (massage warehouse); at health food stores (national - Whole Food Market) and local, metaphysical stores, Naturalist stores.
Here in the La area we have a store called Vitamin Plus - nice prices especially the NOW brand.
